Key Care Tips for UAE Conditions

1. Sunlight & Location

Olive trees flourish in full sun, needing 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Choose an open spot with maximum exposure. Since UAE can have strong dry winds, it’s wise to select or create a protected location to reduce dehydration 

2. Soil & Drainage

Well-draining soil is a must—ideally, sandy or loamy with a pH around 6.0–7.5. Avoid waterlogging to prevent root rot. If planting in containers, use terracotta pots or any vessel with good drainage, and refresh soil every 2–3 years or when root-bound

3. Watering Strategy

• Establishment Phase: Young trees need frequent watering to develop roots—but never let soil stay soggy 

• Once Established: Water deeply but infrequently, allowing soil to dry between sessions 

• Consider drip irrigation or soaker hoses to conserve water—efficient for dry UAE conditions

• In potted situations: water when the top 2–3 inches are dry 

4. Fertilization

Olive trees perform well even in nutrient-poor soil, but occasional feeding is beneficial:

• Use a balanced fertilizer 

• Avoid over-fertilizing—too much nitrogen encourages leafy growth but harms fruiting.

• Organic compost or manure is a good, slow-release option.

5. Pruning

• Prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead branches, shape the canopy, and improve air flow.

• Light summer pruning is also helpful to maintain shape

7. Protection & Disease Management

• Control fungal diseases by ensuring good air flow and avoiding overwatering

• Watch for olive knot; prune during dry conditions and sterilize tools. Apply copper bactericide if needed
