Alocasia Portei
Size: 20cm, comes in nursery pot
Alocasia portei, sometimes called the “elephant ear” plant, is a striking tropical aroid that thrives with the right care. Here’s a care guide:
🌞 Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light.
-
Can tolerate some dappled morning sun, but avoid harsh direct afternoon rays (leaves may scorch).
-
Too little light will cause slow growth and smaller leaves.
💧 Watering
-
Keep soil consistently moist but not soggy.
-
Water when the top 2–3 cm (about 1 inch) of soil is dry.
-
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
-
Use distilled, rain, or filtered water if your tap water is high in salts/chemicals.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives in warm temperatures (18–27°C / 65–80°F)
-
Needs high humidity (60%+). Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group plants together.
🌱 Soil & Potting
-
Use a well-draining, airy mix (e.g., peat/coco coir + perlite + orchid bark).
-
Pot with drainage holes to avoid root rot.
-
Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots crowd the pot.
🍃 Fertilizer
-
Feed during the growing season (spring–summer) every 2–4 weeks with a balanced liquid fertilizer (diluted to half strength).
-
Do not fertilize in winter when growth slows or stops.
✂️ Maintenance
-
Wipe leaves to keep them dust-free (they breathe through the leaf surface).
-
Remove yellow or dying leaves to encourage new growth.
-
It may go dormant in cooler months—reduce watering and let it rest until spring.
⚠️ Common Issues
-
Yellow leaves → Overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Crispy brown edges → Low humidity or underwatering.
-
Drooping leaves → Either underwatering or root rot (check soil moisture).
-
Pests → Watch for spider mites, aphids, and mealybugs.
