🌞 Light
-
Most bonsai (macro or small) do best outdoors with plenty of light.
-
Species matters:
-
Tropical bonsai (ficus, jade, etc.) → bright indirect light indoors or warm outdoors.
-
Temperate bonsai (maple, pine, juniper, olive, etc.) → need full sun outdoors
-
💧 Watering
-
Check soil daily. Water when the top layer is starting to dry.
-
Water deeply until it drains out the bottom.
-
Larger bonsai dry out slower than tiny ones, but don’t let them stay soggy.
-
In summer → may need watering every day; in winter → less often.
🌱 Soil & Repotting
-
Bonsai soil must be well-draining: akadama, pumice, lava rock, or bonsai mix.
-
Repot every 2–5 years (depends on species and pot size).
-
Macro bonsai in larger pots need repotting less often than shohin bonsai.
✂️ Pruning & Wiring
-
Maintenance pruning: Regularly trim back new growth to maintain shape.
-
Structural pruning: Do heavier cuts in early spring (deciduous) or mid-summer (evergreen).
🍂 Feeding
-
Use bonsai fertilizer during the growing season
-
Balanced feed (NPK) in spring, low-nitrogen in colder months
-
Organic cakes or liquid fertilizer both work.
