Anthurium villenaorum Care Guide

(The velvet-leaf beauty with striking veins!)

The Anthurium villenaorum is a stunning velvet-leaf species native to Peru. It’s admired for its thick, velvety leaves with bold, white venation. While it's easier to care for than some other velvet Anthuriums (like warocqueanum or crystallinum), it still thrives best with tropical conditions.

Care Requirements

☀️ Light

  • Bright, indirect light is ideal.

  • No direct sunlight — it burns the velvety leaves.

  • Can tolerate medium light but grows slower with smaller leaves.

💧 Watering

  • Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy.

  • Water when the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) feels dry.

  • Likes consistent moisture but hates sitting in water.

💦 Humidity

  • High humidity is key: 60–80% recommended.

  • Will tolerate 50% humidity but thrives in higher.

  • Use a humidifier, pebble trays, or grow it in a cabinet for best results.

🌡️ Temperature

  • Prefers 18–27°C (65–80°F)

🌱 Soil Mix

  • Needs a very airy, well-draining mix.

  • Ideal mix:

    • 40% orchid bark

    • 20% perlite

    • 20% sphagnum moss

    • 10% horticultural charcoal

    • 10% coco coir or light potting mix

This mimics the epiphytic conditions it enjoys in the wild.

🌸 Fertilizer

  • Feed every 4–6 weeks during spring and summer.

  • Use a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) or an aroid-specific fertilizer, diluted to half strength.

🔁 Repotting

  • Every 1–2 years or when roots outgrow the pot.

  • Always use a pot with drainage holes.
