Size: 15cm, comes in nursery pot
Hoya polyneura ‘Vietnam’, also known as the fishtail Hoya. This plant is a bit more delicate than other Hoyas, but with the right setup it’s stunning. Here’s a detailed guide:
🌱 Light
-
Prefers bright, indirect light.
-
Can tolerate some morning sun but avoid harsh afternoon rays, which can scorch leaves.
-
Indoors, place near an east- or north-facing window or several feet back from a bright south-facing window.
💧 Watering
-
Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy.
-
Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.
-
Reduce watering in winter when growth slows.
-
Use filtered or rainwater if your tap water is very hard—H. polyneura can be sensitive to mineral buildup.
🪴 Soil
-
Needs a loose, airy mix with excellent drainage.
-
A good blend:
-
40% orchid bark or chunky perlite
-
30% peat moss or coco coir
-
30% perlite or pumice
-
-
Adding some horticultural charcoal can also help with drainage and prevent root rot.
🌡️ Temperature & Humidity
-
Thrives at 65–80°F (18–27°C).
-
Likes high humidity (60%+).
-
Use a pebble tray, humidifier, or group with other plants if your air is dry.
-
🌸 Fertilizing
-
Feed with a balanced, diluted fertilizer every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
-
Switch to a bloom booster (slightly higher phosphorus) if you want to encourage flowering.
-
Pause feeding in winter.
✂️ Pruning & Support
-
Let vines trail or climb; the plant produces umbels of creamy, fragrant flowers on mature vines.
-
Don’t cut off the spurs (the small stalks where flowers form), as it blooms from the same points.
⚠️ Common Issues
-
Yellowing leaves → Overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Crispy edges → Low humidity or underwatering.
-
No flowers → Plant is too young, light is too low, or not enough fertilizer.
