Hoya 'Chouke' Care Guide
(A gorgeous, uncommon Hoya with lush foliage and beautiful blooms!)
Hoya 'Chouke' is a cultivated hybrid (believed to be a cross between Hoya carnosa and Hoya macrophylla or similar large-leaf hoyas). It’s loved for its thick, semi-succulent leaves with slight veining and clusters of fragrant star-shaped flowers.
✅ Care Requirements
☀️ Light
-
Bright, indirect light is best for good leaf color and blooming.
-
Can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid hot afternoon sun which can scorch leaves.
-
Too little light = leggy growth and fewer blooms.
💧 Watering
-
Allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
-
Water thoroughly when the pot feels light and the top 2–3 cm (1 inch) is dry.
-
Hoyas prefer to be underwatered rather than overwatered.
-
Use room temperature water.
💦 Humidity
-
Happy with 50–60% humidity, but will thrive in higher humidity (60–80%).
-
Occasional misting helps, but not necessary if humidity is already good.
🌡️ Temperature
-
Ideal range: 18–27°C (65–80°F).
🌱 Soil Mix
-
Needs a light, airy, and well-draining mix.
-
Ideal Hoya mix:
-
40% orchid bark
-
30% perlite
-
20% coco coir or peat moss
-
10% horticultural charcoal
-
Or, you can use cactus mix + extra perlite + orchid bark for extra drainage.
🌸 Fertilizer
-
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring to summer).
-
Use a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) or a bloom booster if you want flowers.
🔁 Repotting
-
Every 2–3 years, or when it becomes very root-bound.
-
Hoyas like being a little root-bound—it encourages blooming.
🪴 Growth Habit
-
Trailing or climbing vine.
-
Support with a trellis, hoop, or let it trail down.
-
New growth emerges as thin vines before leaves develop.
🌸 Encouraging Blooms
To promote flowering, ensure the plant receives ample bright, indirect light and allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Stress from slightly drier conditions can encourage blooming.
Blooms come and go. A Hoya plant may be delivered to you with or without blooms.
