Size: 20cm, comes in nursery pot
The Maidenhair Fern (Adiantum) is beautiful but a bit particular. The key to success is consistent moisture + high humidity.
1) Light
-
Bright indirect light only
-
Avoid direct sun (burns the delicate leaves)
-
Ideal spots: near an east window, bright bathroom, or shaded balcony indoors
2) Water (Most Important)
-
Keep soil consistently moist, never dry
-
If the soil dries out even once, fronds may turn crispy
-
Water when the top 1 cm feels slightly damp, not dry
-
Use room-temperature water
Tip: Bottom watering works well — place the pot in water for 10–15 minutes.
3) Humidity
Maidenhair ferns love high humidity (50–70%+)
-
Place in bathrooms or kitchens
-
Use a humidity tray (pebbles + water)
-
Group with other plants
-
Light misting helps, but humidity around the plant matters more
4) Temperature
-
Ideal: 18–26°C
-
Keep away from:
-
AC vents
-
heaters
-
drafts
-
-
Sudden temperature changes cause leaf drop
5) Soil & Pot
-
Use well-draining, moisture-retentive mix
-
Potting soil + peat/coco + a little perlite
-
-
Pot must have drainage holes
6) Fertilizer
-
Feed once a month in spring/summer
-
Use half-strength liquid fertilizer
-
No feeding in winter
7) Pruning & Recovery
-
Trim brown or crispy fronds at the base
-
If the plant dries out completely, cut it back and keep soil moist — it may regrow from the roots.
Common Problems
-
Crispy leaves → too dry (low humidity or missed watering)
-
Yellow leaves → overwatering or poor drainage
-
Leaf drop → drafts, AC, or sudden dryness
